Gold never corrodes. It is a symbol of elegance, authenticity, and glamor…

Sitting in the middle of L’Art Pure Gallery, at his solo exhibition, ‘Talk of the Windows,’ Faisal bin Khalid Al-Khudaidi is a man whose art lives up to expectations and his personality is proof that being kind is not just a virtue but a way of life. It is no wonder that His Highness Prince Badr Al Sa‘ud, the Minister of Culture, even posted pictures of some of Al-Khudaidi’s artwork from the exhibit. It is a wonder to behold and the concept is even more striking.

‘Talk of the Windows’ is conceptualized from a sociological idea that, just as windows allow light and subtle breezes to pass through the house, so too can souls. When we lose that sense of light, we lose a sense of being and become dark. He breaks down those states into four areas: the Open Area, the Blind Area, the Façade Area, and the Unknown Area.

Each area can be felt from the conceptualized window the artworks represent. Fear, pain, caring, contentment, excitement, and anger are all emotions that one connects with depending on the piece.

This humanitarian man who loves his community works based on themes and, even if the exhibit for a particular theme ends, Al-Khudaidi will continue to explore it with new materials and expressionism. As one of Saudi’s most prominent artists, he has had many opportunities to be part of the cultural community, especially in his hometown, Taif, such as being the head of the local Janadriyah festival and writing articles in the newspaper. Still, his artistic reach has spread nationally and internationally.

Here he gives Ithraeyat an exclusive interview.

Q1. When did you start using Gold?

“I started experimenting with gold leaves in 2009.” Al-Khudaidi hadn’t found a theme before then that would deserve the material. “The idea is what controls the material.” The Windows exhibit is a mix of wood, acrylic, gold and others that show off the different capabilities and needs of this layered concept. According to Al-Khudaidi, “Gold never corrodes. It is a symbol of elegance, authenticity, and glamor. It is flawless or, if it has some minor flaws, it is easy to fix. The gold leaves are so pure and beautiful.” His works show his devotion to materiality and experimentation.

Q2. What do you admire in artists?

“The artists one should admire are those who are cultured, experimenting, and renewing. Someone who doesn’t steal others' works and is open with his time and his knowledge.” Learning and being kind are some of the most admirable characteristics Al-Khudaidi looks for in his community and in people he admires. Having a vision and being a genius can make an artist, but a person is only as great as their legacy in their role in society and life contributing and exchanging ideas. Basically, it is important to be “a part of the community and generous.” Al-Khudaidi himself opens up his studio and time to friends and welcomes all to present their works, exchange ideas, and critique constructively.

Q3. What is your advice for upcoming artists?

“My advice is three parts: Continuity, Experimentation, and Culture.” Upcoming artists should be constantly producing and working on their crafts, experimenting to develop, and exposing themselves to cultural content in whatever format.

Q4. What is art to you?

“Art is life and a balm for the soul.” Al-Khudaidi sees art as a language of exchange and generosity. Art is always a beautiful expression of a person’s inner being and to call art as a balm is expected and understandable. Life is simply more beautiful with art in it.

Al-Khudaidi is a man who is generous with his time and knowledge. Hearing his ideas and looking at his art, it is easy to imagine the tender care and the precision of the work produced. This kindness presented in his creations and his person is palpable and reflective of how he wants to be recognized.
